The catacombs of the Place Royal
An underground tour discovering the remains of the Palace of Charles Quint. Medieval Brussels was dominated by the huge palace of Coudenberg. This architectural ensemble that was built in the beginning of the 12th century is one of the most beautiful palaces in Europe and also a principal residence of Charles Quint. In February 1731, this prestigious building was severely damaged by fire. Forty years later the ruins were demolished and the ground was used for the construction of the Place Royale. The remains of the archaeological site are hosting today's Coudenberg visit. During your visit you will stroll along the Rue Isabelle and discover the main buildings of the former palace, some of which served as foundation for the pavilions of the Court of the Place Royale .
